Taco Bell Shrimp Tacos!

So I went to the bank today at lunch and decided to stop by Taco Bell afterwards. To my surprise and delight, there was a new monthly special plastered over the windows!

Pacific Shrimp TacoPacific Shrimp Tacos

Now this is something special, especially for Taco Bell. The mexican restaurant chain follows the lead of most YUM! brand restaurants and and releases new products on a monthly schedule. Usually this involves rehashing and remixing existing ingredients into new creations. For example –

1. Cheesy Beefy 89 cent Burrito = Slap a beef burrito inside a soft shell tortilla and melt some cheese in between

2. Cheesy Gordita Crunch = Same as #1 except with a gordita and hard shell taco

3. Border Bowls (discontinued) = throw a bunch of ingredients such as steak, rice, beans, tomatoes, etc. into a bowl instead of a burrito

You get the idea… its easier for fast food chains like Taco Bell to use existing ingredients in new ways every month than to introduce new ingredients to all their franchises. Thats why the introduction of the shrimp taco at Taco Bell is so special – it introduces shrimp as a totally new ingredient.

So how did it taste?

Mediocre at best. A total of 6 shrimp were included on the taco, all of which were small to medium size. They were all buried under a ton of avocado ranch sauce, which totally masked any flavor they may have had. The shrimp are allegedly “marinated”, but I would have to order another one without any sauce to verify. I doubt that will ever happen.

The Pacific Shrimp Taco was also relatively expensive. The taco costs approximately $3.19, which is almost four times as much as the comparable grilled chicken soft taco on the value menu. The “value” meal for this new release includes two shrimp tacos and a drink for $6.99. What ever happened to getting a cheap meal at Taco Bell? I always end up spending at least that much when I go, but I always end up with a ton of food. That wouldnt be the case here.

The Pacific Shrimp Taco is an oddity that is definitely worth a try. My recommendation – order one, with the sauce on the side. You dont save anything by ordering the combo. Let me know what you think!

I didn’t really like the Shrimp Tacos at Taco Bell. Next time stop by Del Taco and have their Crispy Shrimp Tacos. Now those tacos are really good.

I wish there were some Del Tacos around the Baltimore area. I went to one in Colorado once and was pleasantly surpised. It seemed like a more authentic Taco Bell with more variety.

Bummer!! Maybe you can find a Taco Time Restaurant. It’s basically the same type of restaurant as Taco Bell and Del Taco.

I thought they were mediocre. Taco Bell can do better!
